The operations of Coca-Cola Amatil in Australia have one of the best water efficiency rates within the global Coca-Cola system.

drop of waterWater efficiency is a clear priority

We work hard to develop stringent water saving strategies and invest in improved infrastructure, technology and research every year.

We continually look to reduce overall water use across the business - in both our manufacturing processes and office facilities.

One way we look to control our water efficiency is through measuring the amount of water used to make one litre of finished beverage. We call this a ‘Water Use Ratio’ (WUR) and in Australia this is approximately 1.57 Litres of water per finished beverage litre (2009 data). This is one of the best ratios in the world within the Coca-Cola system.

Investing in sustainable water sources

Coca-Cola Amatil Australia has invested over $8 million in the last past few years in capital equipment and new technology to ensure the long-term sustainability of our spring water sources.

Our leadership in water saving has resulted in awards and commendations from water authorities across Australia – many of which have cited our local operations as best practice case studies and featured them in their advertising campaigns.

Why are we so focused on saving water?

Saving water brings huge benefits to our communities by reducing consumption of a natural resource, reducing demand for energy and chemicals and providing a more sustainable environment.

Case Study  – Casey Francis

21-year-old Casey Francis, who works at the Perth bottling plant, came up with an excellent innovation that not only saves water but also helps make the workplace safer. Casey and her team, Daniel Jansen, Matt Armstrong and John Partridge, invented the new ‘X-bend’ valve, to more effectively deliver the ingredients into tanks. The simple invention means less syrup is spilled and lost, resulting in 85% less water needed to wash it down.
